A student does not always have to fund Canadian studies alone. Parents, relatives, a spouse, an employer, a scholarship provider or another credible supporter may contribute. What matters is not simply naming a sponsor—it is demonstrating that the funds are genuine, available and sufficient.

What IRCC needs to see

A study permit applicant must show enough money for tuition, living expenses and transportation without relying on unauthorized work in Canada. When another person provides the funds, the application should clearly explain who that person is, why they are helping and how they can afford the commitment.

Who may provide financial support

Common supporters include parents or legal guardians, a spouse or common-law partner, close relatives, an employer, a scholarship body or an educational loan provider. There is no universal rule that only a parent may help. The relationship and the financial arrangement must, however, be credible and supported by evidence.

Build a clear sponsorship package

A strong package can include a signed support letter, proof of relationship, the sponsor’s identification, employment or business evidence, income documents, bank statements, proof of tuition paid and an explanation of any significant deposits. If several people are contributing, show each person’s amount and responsibility.

Availability matters as much as balance

A large closing balance does not establish where the money came from or whether the student can use it. The records should show an understandable financial history. Property values, credit limits and assets that cannot readily be converted into funds may provide context but should not be treated as available cash.

The student still owns the application

Even with a sponsor, the applicant should present a realistic budget and a credible academic plan. The financial story, study plan and family circumstances should be consistent across the different forms, letters and evidence.
